Multi-Agency Effort Underway To Combat Southern Indiana Drug Rings

Last updated on Friday, March 25, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett announces a collaborative effort to take on gangs and guns.

Hogsett says his office is partnering with local law enforcement agencies in the Southern District of Indiana to identify drug trafficking rings and criminals who use illegal firearms to commit crimes.

The multi-agency approach includes the increased use of court-authorized wiretaps and undercover operations.

The U.S. Attorney's Office also will help train officers on the evidence necessary to maximize successful federal prosecutions. Hogsett says the effort is already producing results.

On Wednesday, a Federal Grand Jury returned indictments against 14 defendants who were charged with a violation of federal drug and federal gun laws.

The investigation also has led to the seizure of 35 illegally possessed firearms as well as methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry, whose office is a part of the collaboration, supports the expansive plan. Assistant U.S. Attorney Barry Glickman is leading the initiative.
