Indiana Battery Maker Joins Volvo To Make Electric Car

Last updated on Friday, March 25, 2011

(GREENFIELD, IN) - A Greenfield battery maker has joined forces with Volvo to make an electric luxury car.

Lennart Stegland with Volvo cars of North America says the cars will have a revolutionary large format battery made by Ener1.

Developers say the car will go 95 miles-per-hour, and it will drive 80 miles on a single charge.

Production on the vehicle is expected to begin in ten weeks, but the first cars are promised to dealers in Scandinavia.

Stegland says the vehicles will be sold on the east and west sides of Indianapolis beginning in the first quarter of 2012.

Tom Goesch with Ener1 says the deal is the company's first venture with a luxury vehicle maker.

Ener1 will initially manufacture about 400 batteries for Volvo.

The unit will recharge with a plug that works with a 220 wall outlet.
