(UNDATED) - Earthquake insurance is available in Indiana for those who think they need it, but it’s not required.
Much like with floods, the average home owner's policy doesn't cover damage from earthquakes.
Robyn Crosson with the state department of insurance says people who do have earthquake insurance typically have it added on to their homeowner's policy.
Crosson says the rates vary dependent upon a property's location to a fault line but averages less than 100 dollars a year in Indiana.
Because of the Wasbash Valley Fault System that runs through southern Illinois, Indiana, and northern Kentucky, Crosson says earthquake insurance is more common the further south you go in the state.
Crosson says once you find a credible insurance agent or company, you should discuss your assets, property location, and any structural age or integrity to determine if earthquake insurance is right for you.
