(UNDATED) - It might be the greatest gift you can give and it won't cost a thing.

Social service agencies, hospitals, churches and others say there's a strong need for volunteerism this holiday season. Mike Rowland, spokesman for the Salvation Army's Indiana division, says there's always a need for more volunteers. The army's annual red kettle fund raising effort offers one of the most visible opportunities.

You might also get ideas from your employer. Clarian Health invites employees to invest their time in the Clarian Serves program. The signature element is the community day of service in June.

More recently, Clarian staffers have been helping stack food shipments at a food bank.

Recession To Blame In Donation Drop?

Hoosier charities are seeing a drop in donations this year, likely because of the recession.

The Salvation Army hopes their annual bell ringing campaign will help pull them out of the hole. Jeff Stanger with Salvation Army says they had to dip into their cash reserves this year after falling short $300,000.

Second Helpings is also struggling to meet rising demand. The Coalition For Homeless Intervention and Prevention issued an urgent request for donations as the winter months approach.

The recession has hit everyone hard and some people who used to put coins in the bucket now need help.
