(INDIANA STATEHOUSE) - State Budget Committee Members learned Wednesday $454 million dollars could be saved each year if schools switched health insurance plans.

K-12 schools and public universities and the state could save the money if the schools were placed in the state's public employees health insurance plans.

The savings would come at a cost though-higher premiums or deductibles and lesser benefits that some currently receive.

State lawmakers nearly mandates all schools to join the state's plan last legislative session, but decided to study the plan further.

Five schools in the state voluntarily joined and according to consultants have saved a total of $3.5 million dollars.
