Group Wants Memorial Day To Remain On May 30th

Last updated on Monday, May 31, 2010

(UNDATED) - Memorial Day falls on May 31st this year.

The date is nothing more than coincidence.

Some say it should be returned to May 30th, regardless of where the date falls.

The first Decoration Day, as it was called then, was May 30th, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of union and confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

It was not until 1971, when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Federal Holiday Act, that the last Monday in the month became Memorial Day.

That created a three-day weekend and prompted the barbecues and boat trips that raise concern among traditionalists.
