Militia Member To Face Charges In Michigan

Last updated on Thursday, April 1, 2010

(HAMMOND, IN) - The Hammond man accused of conspiring to kill police officers as a member of an extremist militia group will be transferred to Michigan to face sedition and weapons charges.

A lawyer for 46-year-old Thomas Piatek says his client will plead not guilty once he's there.

Piatek is one of nine people charged with planning a deadly trap in which militia members would murder a police officer, then ambush police attending that officer's funeral with makeshift bombs.

Prosecutors say the group hoped the attack would provoke a war with the federal government.
