Will Health Care Reform Guarantee Quality?

Last updated on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - It may provide more health care to more people, but will the reform signed into law Tuesday guarantee the quality of health care?

And are hospitals prepared to deal with the impact of the legislation?

"We do anticipate that will be some change in volume, increased volume, at some point," says Joe Stuteville, Spokesman for the St. Francis hospitals and Health Center in Indianapolis, Beech Grove, Mooresville and Plainfield.

Wishard Hospital, with a mission to serve the needy, might actually lose some of the patients that it would have had previously.

But Clarian Health Director of Health policy research and analysis Neil Pickett points to estimates that about 23-million Americans will still have no coverage.

And increased preventive and routine care could at least partially offset the anticipated increases.

"Certainly, there's a lot to be said for that old doctor's adage, 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'," said Stuteville.
