(STATEHOUSE) - Governor Mitch Daniels signed 18 bills into law Thursday, including the controversial one allowing employees to bring a firearm to work as long as it is stored in their locked vehicle.
Opponents wanted Daniels to veto the bill after a recent incident in portage where a state worker fired a shotgun at his fellow employees following a negative performance review.
Daniels cited constitutional rights and the overwhelming approval by the General Assembly to justify signing it into law. But Daniels says the law contains ambiguities that will need to be refined in the future to avoid what he calls "unnecessary lawsuits".
Two bills that gridlocked the legislature are among more than a dozen yet to hit Daniels desk. They include the one year delay in the increase of the unemployment insurance tax for businesses and the bill allowing Indiana schools to transfer money into their general fund to cushion the blow of major budget cuts.
The governor says he doesn't plan to veto any of the bills passed by the 2010 General Assembly.
