FDA Imposing Tougher Tobacco Advertising Guidlines

Last updated on Monday, March 22, 2010

(UNDATED) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is imposing tougher guidelines for sales and advertising by tobacco companies to protect children.

The rules include a ban on full color ads that can be seen by kids, free samples and the sale or distribution of tobacco brand logo products such as hats and t-shirts.

Also, self- service displays and vending machines have to be in age-restricted areas.

Tim Filler with Smoke Free Indy says it's another step in the right direction.

"Indiana really needs this kind of boost to its tobacco prevention efforts." said Filler.

The new rules go into effect June 22nd.
