Debate Over Indiana Gay Marriage Reignited

Last updated on Thursday, January 21, 2010

(INDIANA STATEHOUSE) - A senate committee has reignited the debate over gay marriage, endorsing a constitutional amendment to ban the practice.

State law already prohibits same-sex marriage, but supporters of the amendment make the same argument as proponents of the property tax circuit-breaker amendment approved earlier this week: without being enshrined in the constitution, the courts could end up overturning the law.

The senate judiciary committee voted 6-4 along party lines to recommend the amendment to the full senate.
