Tonight Marks 29th Anniversary Of John Lennon's Death

Last updated on Tuesday, December 8, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - John Lennon was shot to death outside of the Dakota Apartment Building in New York City 29 years ago tonight, December 8th, 1980.

Tom Fontaine, owner of Rock & Roll Investments in Indianapolis, is an authoritative collector of iconic music memorabilia.

He says 29 years after his death, John Lennon fans still collect mementos of him such as posters and statues.

But serious collectors have some rare items.

Fontaine owns a John Lennon autographed guitar strap, one of the few known to exist.

He says the "Holy Grail" of a John Lennon collection is anything he wrote in his own hand, such as drawings or lyrics.

Those have been valued from $800,000 to over a million dollars.

John Lennon autographs are more affordable for a beginning collector.

Even some checks he wrote or endorsed have surfaced.

But Fontaine cautions potential buyers to do their homework to authenticate a John Lennon autograph before buying it.
