Purdue Officials Outlining Expense Cuts

Last updated on Wednesday, December 16, 2009

(WEST, IN) - Purdue University officials are outlining the first steps toward cutting expenses following Governor Daniels reduction of higher education revenues from the state.

Purdue Treasurer Al Diaz says the cuts will initially come from reducing energy-related expenses and in the university's hiring process.

Diaz says a steering committee of faculty, staff and students are making suggestions to reduce costs.

They're also acting as a sounding board as different cost reduction options are presented.

Diaz says the university has been planning for dealing with a future structural deficit for months, so they're using the same approach to deal with the governor's cuts.

Purdue's West Lafayette Campus could face more than a $30 million reduction in state funding over the next year and a half, although the final figure may not be known until mid-January.
