(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - A re-creation of the radio room aboard the USS Indianapolis is the newest exhibit at the Indiana War Memorial Museum.
The museum is located at 431 North Meridian Street in downtown Indianapolis.
A group of 32 amateur radio operators, who call themselves the USS Indy Radio Volunteers, assembled vintage world war two radio gear from around the country for the exhibit.
Using photos from the sister ship of the USS Indianapolis, the group built a working replica of the ship's radio room.
Brigadier General Stewart Goodwin, Executive Director of the Indiana War Memorials, says one remarkable find for the exhibit is a 1,200 pound piece of world war two radio equipment that had never been used.
It was discovered still in the box, stored in a warehouse in Utah.
Goodwin says all of the equipment in the exhibit works and the volunteers will use it occasionally as an amateur radio station.
