(FISHERS, IN) - Voters in Indiana’s fastest growing school district have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a property tax increase to fund their schools.
The vote was 82% yes, 18% no with over 10,000 votes cast.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools asked for a property tax hike of 1% to patch a $5 million dollar hole in the budget.
District officials have said they need the money for operating expenses just to maintain the current class size.
Hamilton Southeastern Superintendent Brian Smith has stated the state's method for distributing school funds is unfair, saying that per-pupil spending does not keep up with their growing population.
The district has also filed a lawsuit against the state.
