(PRINCETON, IN) - Princeton’s Toyota plant begins production Thursday on the Highlander SUV.
Toyota announced last August it would begin building Highlanders at the plant.
It's spent the time since then training workers and prepping the production line.
The line will continue to turn out the Toyota Sequoia, but the Sequoia is built on a frame, while the smaller Highlander is a unibody vehicle.
That required modifications to allow the same line to handle both.
Spokeswoman Kelly Dillon says the plant's east building will continue to produce the Toyota Sienna.
The plant plans a factory-floor celebration for workers after the first highlander rolls off the line.
The plant has a production capacity of $300,000.
Dillon says the number of highlanders built there will depend on sales, in keeping with the automaker's inventory-on-demand policy.
The Princeton plant employs 42,000 workers.
