Indiana Lawmakers Ready To Discuss When The Shcool Year Should Begin

Last updated on Wednesday, September 30, 2009

(INDIANA STATEHOUSE) - Indiana Lawmakers are getting ready to discuss when the school year should begin in the Hoosier State.

The Interim Study Commission on Education is taking up the issue beginning Wednesday.

Parents in a group called save Indiana summers contend that pushing back the start of school would boost tax revenue from tourism and save money by using less electricity in the hottest days of August.

They are pushing for a law calling for school to start no earlier than the last week of August.

Opponents say local districts should decide when school starts.

A bill aimed at moving back the start date failed to pass in the last legislative session.
