(COLUMBUS) - After the devastating flooding in Columbus, Indiana last year, plans are now in the works to purchase a flood gauge for the city.

The gauge would be placed at the head of Haw Creek and would be able to warn of floodwaters five hours in advance.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management Director Dennis Moats said the gauge could be installed by October.

Operating costs for the gauge would be shared amongst the city, county, and federal government.

Last year's flooding across southern Indiana caused about 500 million dollars in damage in Columbus.
