(UNDATED) - Economist predict back-to-school spending on children in grade school will drop eight percent this year due to the recession.

Many parents who cannot afford to buy even basic school supplies are relying on local service organizations for help.

In Marion County, the "backpack attack" is an annual school supply drive that benefits over 20,000 children in Indianapolis public schools.

Jessica Read with the United Way of central Indiana says 289 businesses and organizations have been collecting items throughout the summer to help those students who can't afford basic school supplies.
