Muncie Mayor Faces Wrongful Termination Lawsuit

Last updated on Saturday, June 27, 2009

(MUNCIE) - Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley has been slapped with a wrongful termination lawsuit against the city.

The Union Representing City Firefighters says McShurley didn't have the authority to lay off 32 firefighters this month.

According to the International Association of Firefighters local 1348, the Board of Public Works and Safety has exclusive control over the fire department.

However, Muncie Deputy Mayor Dick Shirey says the city is exempt from running layoffs through the Board of Works because the city operates with a fire merit commission.

Mayor McShurley laid off the firefighters last Friday, after anticipating a $3.8 million budget shortfall.

Five Muncie Police officers were also laid off.
