(UNDATED) - Two years after soaring tax bills sparked a revolt among property owners, most of the state’s assessments are still behind schedule.
Only Owen and Kosciusko counties sent tax bills in time to impose the normal May 10 deadline for payments.
37 more counties are a month or two behind.
Everyone else is further behind than that, including Marion and Brown Counties, which are still trying to finish last year's bills.
Marion County's fall 2008 bill goes in the mail the end of next week, with payment due by July 9.
Treasurer Mike Rodman hopes to send this year's spring bills by late October and the fall bills no later than next February.
But Marion County looks like a gazelle next to Laporte County, which is still trying to wrap up its bills from 2007.
The state has taken over temporarily to try to get the county caught up.
Tax bills were delayed by reassessment, and delayed further in Marion, Laporte, and other counties when the state ordered a do-over, ruling the first round of assessments was too badly bungled to use.
