(UNDATED) - The recession is putting a strain on budgets, but some schools are finding that the slowdown is helping to keep veteran teachers in the classroom.
Half of Indiana's teachers have reached the age of 50.
The next decade could bring a crisis here and across the nation.
But like many other veteran workers, some retired teachers are putting off their plans to leave.
And with budgets under strain and some school systems, like the Indianapolis Public Schools, forced to lay off teachers because of declining enrollment, the retirements are not the immediate problem.
