(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis is turning over maintenance of 28 city parks to the nonprofit group founded by Indianapolis "Survivor" contestant Rupert Boneham.
Rupert's Kids has put at-risk teenagers and young adults to work in the parks since 2006.
The group took care of six parks that year, and increased that number to nine last year.
This year, about 20 of Rupert's Kids will join juvenile offenders fulfilling community-service requirements to handle mowing, landscaping, litter cleanup, and other maintenance in all 22 of the city's "mini-parks" of less than two acres, plus six larger parks: Barton, Marrott, Broadway and 61st, Polin, Ramsey, and Alice Carter.
Boneham was voted off the island in his initial "Survivor" appearance, but his personality and distinctive bushy beard got him invited back for a "Survivor All-Stars" series, where he won a cash prize as viewers' favorite contestant.
