Jefferson County Courthouse Goes Up In Flames

Last updated on Thursday, May 21, 2009

(MADISON) - The Jefferson County Courthouse in Madison, Indiana burned well into the overnight hours.

Fire crews from all over southern Indiana and Kentucky responded to blaze around 6pm Wednesday.

They got the fire under control around 9pm, but it continued to burn.

The 154-year old building's golden colored dome was doused with water, but appeared to be heavily damaged.

Inmates from the adjacent jail were evacuated and moved to another location.

No injuries have been reported and no other buildings appeared to be in danger.

The courthouse recently underwent some renovations. Jefferson County Commissioner Julie Berry says the courthouse will be rebuilt.
