Hoosier Lottery Pays Up, Over $3 Million In Lawsuits

Last updated on Monday, May 18, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two discrimination lawsuits against the Hoosier Lottery have cost the agency $3 million in pay outs.

Eight African American employees won a $2.8 million settlement earlier this month.

They claimed the reason they were fired from the lottery between January and August 2005, was because of their race.

A report prepared for the plaintiffs said 12 black employees were among 29 fired during a 20-month period.

The report also found that during that same period, one black employee was hired, compared to 50 new hires who were white.

Another $225,000 settlement was won last year by the private agency's former attorney, who is disabled.
