(UNDATED) - The White House announced a new single national standard to regulate auto fuel economy and carbon emissions.
The plan calls for an auto company's overall fleet fuel economy average to hit 35.5 mpg by the year 2016.
Passenger cars would average 39 mpg while the fuel economy of light trucks would go up to 30 mpg.
The new federal carbon emissions standard for autos would trump those of individual states.
The trade-off will allow the states to use federal money to monitor the environment instead of bearing the cost of it themselves.
Jesse Kharbanda with the Hoosier Environmental Council welcomes the announcement.
He says the reduction of ozone in the air caused by auto emissions will help improve public health.
