Children's Home Still On The Road To Closure

Last updated on Wednesday, May 27, 2009

(KNIGHTSTOWN) - Rush County Judge David Northan has rejected a request by a student and alumni group for an injunction to block the closing of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home near Knightstown.

The state is converting the school for troubled teens into the Indiana National Guard's Hoosier Youth Challenge Academy next year.

The final graduation ceremony was held last Saturday.

Officials said the remaining students would be released to their families but attorney Everett Powell II says the kids aren't being protected.

He says some have been turned away by their families and have been detained in a juvenile correction facility.

Powell said they didn't want to fight it out in court and had hoped the legislature would approve a budget that included funding for the home.

Governor Mitch Daniels says keeping the school open would not be cost- effective.
