Swine Flu Keeps Hoosier Soccer Players Out Of Mexico Games

Last updated on Tuesday, April 28, 2009

(WESTFIELD) - The swine flu scare has forced two young Hoosiers who were in Mexico for a soccer tournament to return to the US.

16-year-old Eriq Zavaleta of Westfield and Perry Kitchen of Indianapolis are members of the US team. They've already qualified to advance to the under- 17 World Cup in Nigeria in the fall but were still scheduled to play more games.

Eriq's dad, Carlos Zavaleta, says it's bittersweet for him because he now has to try to cancel his flight to Los Angeles , where he was going to go and see his son play this week.

Carlos says, when it's all said and done, his son's safety comes first and he'll have other opportunities to see Eriq play.

The boys are in Florida, where the team is trained and schooled.
