(UNDATED) - Midnight Wednesday is the deadline for filing income tax returns. But the post offices won't be open late to accommodate the procrastinators.

They ended that practice three years ago. Kim Yates with the Postal Service in Indianapolis says that decision seemed especially wise this year, with the economy lagging and many people out of work.

There had been less demand for it in recent years anyway with more people filing electronically.

You can "e-file" at the last minute on your home computer and have no trouble meeting the deadline. If you're taking your return to the post office, make sure you get there before closing time. If you drop it in a mail box, Yates urges you to check the last pickup time.

If it's not picked up until Thursday, you'll miss the deadline. And make sure you seal the envelope.

She says some returns come open and get caught in mail-handling machines.
