(TERRE HAUTE) - A new historical marker in Western Indiana celebrates the life and work of Saint Theodora Guerin.

The site on the Sisters of Providence motherhouse grounds near Saint Mary of the Woods College commemorates Guerin's efforts to establish schools and orphanages in the Indiana wilderness in the mid-1800s.

Indiana Historical Bureau spokesman Jeremy Hackerd says Guerin directed the opening of 11 schools in 9 Indiana towns. Pope Benedict canonized her in 2006. Hackerd says there are about 530 historical markers throughout the state.

The Indiana Historical Bureau reviews applications and grants markers for those who have made a significant impact on the state.
