(FORT WAYNE) - Fort Wayne city officials are investigating what caused a 4-foot hole in the road.
The hole formed Saturday evening.
City workers have not determined the exact cause, but may be the result of a broken pipe. Equipment is being brought in today to help pin down the problem.
Utilities spokesman Frank Suarez says a broken pipe can be attributed to age or general stress and ground shifting. Suarez doesn't believe this collapse is a sinkhole. He says a sinkhole is a depression that is formed by underlying limestone bedrock and is dissolved by ground water.
Last month, the collapse of a 125-year-old city brick sewer pipe triggered a hole 12 feet wide by 15 feet deep.
