Former Mayor Goldsmith Pleased With Kennedy Service Act Passing

Last updated on Wednesday, April 22, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Former Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith is backing a new bill to provide billions of dollars in federal aid for service entities, including Americorps.

The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act calls for $6 billion to be spent on non-profits between 2010 and 2014.

Goldsmith currently serves as Vice Chair of the Corporation for National and Community Service and says his previous role helped shaped his support for the plan.

He says the measure signed Tuesday by President Obama will help increase the number of volunteers nationwide from 75 to 250,000.

Currently, 62 million Americans work for service entities. Goldsmith expects the bill to dramatically boost that figure.
