Convicted Murderer Suing Sheriff For Inhumane Treatment In Prison

Last updated on Saturday, April 4, 2009

(HAMMOND) - The man who raped and murdered a Merrillville woman 25 years ago claims he’s suffering from inhumane conditions at the Lake County Jail.

48-year-old Mark Erler is now suing Sheriff Roy Dominguez.

Erler claims that while he was on suicide watch, he wasn't allowed to bathe.

He says he was served two jelly sandwiches and two bologna sandwiches a day, and received poor treatment for a leg wound.

Erler also claims the sheriff allowed the press and the murder victim's family to watch his jail booking.

Erler plead guilty to the 1984 rape and murder of Linda Bennitt.

He was arrested last year after DNA evidence linked him to the crime.
