(UNDATED) - Distraught Hoosier smokers are reaching out to the Indiana Tobacco Quitline in record numbers following the federal tax increase that raised prices by 62 cents a pack.

Calls to 1-800-QUIT-NOW increased by nearly 400% in the week that the spike occurred April 1st. Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Executive Director Karla Sneegas says this week workers fielded 1,100 calls.

Phone counselors develop free individualized quit plans for each caller between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

The campaign for tobacco-free kids estimates that in Indiana, the federal tax increase will prompt nearly 28,000 adults to snuff out their cigarettes for good.
