(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Blood Center partnered with the Marion County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana Pacers for a blood drive in downtown Indianapolis Wednesday.

Marion County Sheriff Frank Anderson and his department's staff turned out in force to donate blood at the bloodmobile parked just outside the Marion County jail.

Meghan Works with the Indiana Blood Center says partnering with local downtown events brings out a sense of community in cities statewide.

Many charitable organizations which rely on monetary donations are suffering during the recession. Indiana Blood Center CEO Byron Buhner says he's also noticed the number of successful employee blood drives has diminished as more people lose their jobs.

But Buhner says despite the recession, Hoosiers still feel a need to give back to their communities and giving blood offers a way to do that for free.
