Woman Pleads Guilty To False Pregancy, Theft

Last updated on Wednesday, March 11, 2009

(ALBION) - A northern Indiana woman has pleaded guilty to charges that she faked a pregnancy to bilk $2,500 from a New York couple hoping to adopt the child.

32-year-old Sona Louise Dodson of Kendallville was sentenced to one year and nine months in jail. In exchange to her plea, prosecutors dropped a felony theft charge.

Court documents indicate Dodson targeted a couple who placed an advertisement in an Indiana newspaper in the summer of 2007 looking for a birth mother.

Attorney Denise Seidelman of Yorktown Heights, New York, who represented the couple, says Dodson talked with them every day for six weeks.

The couple paid Dodson for living expenses and prenatal expenses before learning that she was not pregnant.
