(UNDATED) - Officials with the National Weather Service are pleased with the results of Wednesday's statewide tornado drills.

Tornado warning sirens were sounded as part of severe weather awareness week in Indiana.

Meteorologist Dave Tucek says there were some issues related to weather radio operation.

Some home radio receivers not activating, possibly tied to the programming of some new models.

He says that's what these drills are all about, to see what works and what doesn't work and correct those issues.

Tucek says for the most part, county officials report that the sirens worked fine.

The way the warning sirens are used depends on the county, according to Tucek.

Some use them strictly for tornado warnings, others, like Marion county, also activate them during a severe thunderstorm warning.

He adds we should be alert for severe weather year- round, not just in the spring.
