(UNDATED) - It's a tradition dating back to 1943. "Red Cross Month" has been celebrated each March since President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated it as an annual tradition.
The tradition continues as President Barack Obama and Governor Mitch Daniels have proclaimed March 2009 as Red Cross Month. During March, the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, along with all the Red Cross chapters, encourages communities to get involved with their local Red Cross.
Carol Greeley with the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, says in every disaster response and relief effort, volunteers are 96% of the work force of the Red Cross and are critical to the success of each and every Red Cross endeavor.
Red Cross month is celebrated in Central Indiana with Red Cross flags flown at over 200 local businesses, schools, police and fire stations, emergency preparedness information on Citizens Gas and IPL bills, and Red Cross billboards and banners welcoming travelers at the new Indianapolis International Airport.
A "Be Red Cross Ready" preparedness booklet will also be available.
