(UNDATED) - Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Indiana for men and women combined.
The American Cancer Society's Vicki Rakowski says screening for colorectal cancer not only detects the disease at an early, curable stage, but it is preventable by finding and removing polyps (precancerous growths) that could become cancerous.
90-percent of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer at an early stage survive the disease.
Rakowski says insurers in Indiana are required to cover some form of colorectal screening, yet only 56-percent of Indiana adults age 50 and older report being screened for colorectal cancer.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
