(UNDATED) - Several Indiana communities have experiences field fires over the last few weeks.
State Fire Marshall Kin Greeson says despite some areas of the state getting a lot of rain, other areas are rather dry and therefore susceptible to field fires, especially of open burning gets out of control.
The state has some general laws regarding opening burning on the books, but counties and local fire departments have more individual control. Greeson says open burning is not advisable anywhere in certain conditions such as dry windy days, high heat, and ozone action days.
Rural communities, farms, orchards, nurseries, cemeteries, and drainage ditches are exempt from state laws regarding open burning.
Agencies in Southern Indiana, specifically around the Hoosier National Forest, have to be diligent to protect that area from being ravaged by wildfires.
