Gambling Addictions Enhanced By March Madness

Last updated on Wednesday, March 25, 2009

(UNDATED) - March Madness and betting on the brackets is fun for most Hoosiers. But for someone with a gambling addiction, it’s just an opportunity to engage in their habit.

Mary Lay with the Indiana Problem Gambling Awareness Program says a gambling addiction can start when someone wagers more than they can afford. But instead of stopping, they continue to bet and head down a slippery slope that leads to debt, depression and desperation.

Symptoms may include being preoccupied with gambling and talking about it all the time, or just the opposite... being secretive and defensive about it.

A gambling addict may chase their loses, continuing to bet in an attempt to recover their money. They may also say they're trying to cut back on their gambling but don't have the ability to do it.

Lay says the Indiana Problem Gambling Awareness Program offers help on their hotline: 1-800-994-8448.
