Deputy Accused Of Handcuffing Boy For Six Hours

Last updated on Thursday, March 12, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Marion County sheriff’s deputy accused of handcuffing a 12-year-old boy’s hands behind his back for several hours has been charged with felony neglect and official misconduct.

Investigators say 24-year-old Deputy Sydney Eghan and the boy's mother, Betsy Chestnut, were arrested last weekend when the boy's mother called 911, to tell Eghan he needed to come home from the jail and unlock the handcuffs.

The boy was reportedly being punished for stealing a cell phone. A probable cause report says the boy was locked in the cuffs for more than six hours.

Eghan has been suspended without pay, pending an internal investigation.
