(CARMEL) - Fat Tuesday, the day considered the last “fling” prior to 40 days of lent, is over, making way for Ash Wednesday.
The day gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of western Christians as a sign of repentance.
Senior pastor Bert Kite of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Carmel says the ashes remind the faithful that they will one day die, but also that God will bless them forever.
Leading up to Easter, the Christian faithful will typically sacrifice something for lent, partly to show selflessness.
St. Mark's United Methodist holds an Ash Wednesday dinner tonight at 6:00pm, followed by a special service at 7:00pm.
