(GARY) - Two Gary teenagers were killed Wednesday after their car split in half in an accident nearly a mile away from their school.

The Lake County Coroner's Office identified one victim as 18-year-old Nathaniel "Nate" Williams.

17-year-old Kendall Alford was pronounced dead later in the afternoon.

Witnesses reported the victims were going a high rate of speed when Alford hit a pothole, lost control of the car and struck a traffic light pole.
