St Vincent Hospital Kick Starts Kidney Transplant Program

Last updated on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS) - St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital now has a kidney transplant program in partnership with The Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Bashir Sankari, the surgical director of the program, says the hospital thought about starting a kidney transplant program two years ago. He says it took that long, working with The Cleveland Clinic, to assemble the surgical staff and meet the required government regulations.

St. Vincent got approval to start their kidney transplant program in October 2008 and doctors performed their first successful kidney transplant last month on a 58-year-old patient from Elwood.

The new program complements St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital's heart transplant program which has been operating for over 20 years.
