INDOT Commissioner Stepping Down

Last updated on Thursday, February 5, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation is stepping down from his position.

Karl Browning submitted his resignation to Governor Mitch Daniels stating he will step down at the end of February.

The governor's spokeswoman Jane Jankowski says Browning joined the cabinet in 2005 with the intent of staying only two years, but decided to stay two more.

INDOT Deputy Communications Director Bruce Childs says Browning referred to his resignation as "bittersweet" in an e-mail to INDOT employees. He reportedly expressed his gratitude for their hard work in making INDOT more efficient and effective, but also stressed his desire to work in education.

The governor has already named Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Executive Diretor Mike Reed as the next INDOT commissioner. Reed will join INDOT February 16th for a two-week transition period with Browning.
