(UNDATED) - The preliminary figures show 808 people were killed on Indiana roadways in 2008—down from 898 in 2007.
The figures extends a downward trend that began several years ago.
State Police give the credit to increased law enforcement efforts, a higher percentage of people wearing seat belts, and automobiles being made safer.
And although there it has not been documented, Sgt. Curt Durnil in the Bloomington district also suspects fewer people traveled last year because of the higher price of gasoline.
Durnil also says many of the last year's victims would have survived if they had been wearing their seat belts.
