Police: Newborn Abandoned On Doorstop

Last updated on Thursday, January 22, 2009

(LAWRENCE) - Police say a newborn infant was left abandoned on a doorstep in a Lawrence neighborhood.

Detective Gary Woodruff says the African-American female baby was found Wednesday morning at a private residence wrapped in a towel and a few other adult clothes with a note that read, "I can't take care of my baby- please help."

The infant is believed to be less than 24 hours old. Police believe the baby may have been left sometime between 9pm and 9:30pm Tuesday night based on when the elderly resident says her animals stirred. However, the child wasn't found until after 10am Wednesday morning when relatives came by for a visit.

Woodruff says police are trying to locate the mother to ensure her well-being as well as determine the circumstances of the case.
