Muncie Closing Two Library Branches

Last updated on Thursday, January 22, 2009

(MUNCIE) - The Muncie Public Library plans to close two branches because it expects a big drop in funding as new statewide property tax caps take effect.

Library officials expect that the Vivian Conley and local history and genealogy branches will close by June 1st. Plans are for moving materials from the genealogy facility to a neighboring downtown library, which will have its collections moved to other branches.

Officials blame the closings on an anticipated 44 percent reduction in funding because of property tax caps enacted by state legislators last year.

The library started a hiring freeze last March and also has cut service hours and some programs.
