(INDIANAPOLIS) - Many Hoosiers commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by participating in the “National Day of Service” to their community.
Nearly 40 Indianapolis area campaign workers for President-Elect Barack Obama volunteered to work at the Julian Center's thrift store. Proceeds from the store benefit their shelter for women who are leaving abusive relationships.
The volunteers helped unpack, sort and price a roomful of donations to the shelter's "Thrifty Threads" store. Volunteers organized the merchandise while the store was closed for the MLK Day holiday.
Thrifty Threads is open to the public, but women from the shelter shop at the store free of charge.
Students Reflect On Martin Luther King Jr.'s Legacy
Several hundred people gathered at Madame Walker Theatre in Indianapolis to hear celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
While many invited guests spoke to the legacy of the slain civil rights leader, the pending inauguration of the nation's first African-American president added to the excitement and celebration of the day.
Students with the Tri-City High Schools gospel choir performed to a standing ovation crowd. The students weren't alive when Dr. King made his mark on history, but they now that Tuesday's event wouldn't have been possible with out his foundation.
